Avon Wash-Off Waterproof Mascara

I have to admit that the only reason I wanted to try Avon’s Wash-Off Waterproof mascara is because it comes in an adorable mini size, and for some reason, even the most useless product in a cute mini size is suddenly irrestible to me. For $1.29 for the mini size, I decided to try 2 colors of this mascara, black and violet.

I tried the black first, and I love this mascara! Remember, I use an eyelash curler, so all my mascara reviews are based on how it performs withe the curler. This one is great. The mascara helps my lashes hold the curl, and when I used the eyelash comb, my lashes separated neatly, no clumps, no flakes.

I’ve never used waterproof mascara before, but I’ve heard it can be difficult to remove. I haven’t had any trouble getting this mascara off with my usual make-up remover.

Violet is a pretty color, but if you have dark lashes like me, it really won’t be noticably different than the black mascara. I am wearing the violet mascara today with purple eyeliner and shadow, and I love it!

STARS: 5 out of 5!

PRO’s: comes in the cutest mini size!; $1.29 for mini-size, $6.50 for full-size, great price; no clumping or flaking; really makes lashes stand out if used with eyelash curler; easy to remove with make-up remover. Also, a practical side to the mini-size is that it is recommended that you replace mascara every 3 months. The mini size means you won’t waste the mascara by replacing it as recommended, since it’s so small.

CON’s: The full-size mascara only comes in black and brown, so the violet color is only available in the mini size. Other than that, I really don’t have any cons for this product.

The Best Earrings for Your Hairstyle

When you select a pair of earrings in the morning, are you thinking about your hairstyle? The Short Hair Diva on says you should. The following advice is from her article, The Right Earrings and Necklaces for Your Hairstyle:

“If you have long, medium, or short hair, do pay attention to your earrings. As always, do your homework, and know your own facial shape, and what hair styles look good on you. If, for example, you have a round face, you may want to rethink those round hoops, or button earrings. These will just accentuate the roundness. If you want to wear hoops, choose some that are slightly oval, elongated, or even square or triangular. This will add some length to your face.

How about if your face tends to be long, and you have long hair? …you may want to choose an updo, or a simple and chic chignon or French braid in the back. This leaves those shell-like earlobes tantalizingly exposed! Give your face some dimension with fun glitzy rhinestone clusters, chunky CZ dazzlers, sparkly beaded dangles, diamond cut gold or silver drops…

That old saying about short hairs wearing small earrings is just fashion past-history. When your hair is short, you can get away with all kinds of earring mayhem!! You can sport tiny, twinkling studs, “huggie hoops,” large hoops, doorknockers, leverbacks, French hooks; really, my dears—the sky is the limit.”

I like dangly earrings when my hair is down, and hoops when my hair is up. I also strongly prefer silver over gold; silver looks much better with my skin tone. If you are not sure what your skin tone is, click here!

Mary Jane Pumps

Meet Morgan! That’s the cutesy name of these Mary Jane pumps from Target. Unfortunately this photo from the website makes them look like frumpy, geriatric librarian shoes, like I should wear them with my knee-high stockings rolled down to my ankles. Just take my word for it, they are adorable shoes.

As much as I love shoes, I hardly ever buy any. I have a strong practical streak that doesn’t let me buy shoes just because they’re cute, and I’ll talk myself out of a purchase each time.

Except this time! These shoes have a 2 inch heel, and after being frustrated with 4 inch heels on every damn pair of shoes I see, I was excited to see a pair of shoes I can actually wear to work and not have to limp home on battered toes and throbbing feet. I like that they will look great with long or short skirts, as well as with a suit or trousers. When I tried them on and they were actually comfortable, I was sold.

As an honorable mention, I also love these peep-toe heeled booties, but alas, a 3.5 inch heel is too much torture for me.

Make-Up Bags

My own cosmetic bag is similiar to this one (above), and I love having a clear make-up bag! No more rooting around, dumping it out, or rifling through it to find one small item. I can see where everything is and find everything quickly.

Sephora’s signature clear make-up bag is only $4! It’s 7.5 x 5 x 1.5, which is plenty big enough for me, but it may be too small depending on the size of your beauty stash.

I also like these show-offs of the make-up bag world:

Sephora’s metallic sequined make-up bags are $9 (on sale) and come in 7 colors. They are 8 x 4, so again a petite size, but perfect for carrying cosmetics on the go inside another bag, or while traveling.

For those of you who are more hard-core (and have lots of make-up), Sephora offers this limited-edition silver snake-print train case:For $45, it has an adjustable inner tray, an open compartment, a lock and key, and a detachable strap.

And luckily, Sephora sells plenty of items to fill up any size cosmetic bag!

Purchasing Freeze

The other day I cleaned out my make-up bag and my cosmetics stash, and I hereby declare and vow that I will NOT purchase another lip gloss, lipstick, nail polish, or eye shadow! It made me wonder what makes me buy another pink lip gloss, knowing I have a very similiar one at home already, or yet another red nail polish, when I have 3 shades in my caddy.

There’s a touch of fantasy, of hope, of excitement to buying new beauty products, something retailers cash in on, with that promise of a new look, a new feeling, all from a new color or new item. Most beauty junkies probably know what I’m talking about when I say it’s exciting to get a new color, a new product, and tear into it for the first time to try it out.

In realizing how much I’ve duplicated products and essentially wasted money, however, I am definitely going forth with a more aware and more realistic attitude when it comes to buying make-up! I will live without yet another lip gloss that is only 2 degrees darker than a shade of pink I have at home already, and no one would have noticed the difference anyway!

And whatever shall I do with the money I’ll save? Check out the black boots in the post below!

Fall Line Up: Shoes!

Fall is my favorite season, and definitely my favorite wardrobe. I love snuggly sweaters, boots, jackets, deep colors, and rich textures.

While shopping for sandals on sale (now’s the time to get great prices on sandals, ladies), I got excited about some new styles of shoes for fall over at

Okay, I cheated, and the white sandals are clearly not fall shoes, but they were so cute I wanted to feature them here anyway (and they’re on sale for $29.99!) Each photo above is a link to the product description on Easy Spirit’s website.

My favorite is the simple, sleek black boot on top. They also come in a beautiful dove gray suede, and in brown. I love that they can be dressed up with slacks for work, or add class to a pair of blue jeans.

But back to the white sandals…wouldn’t they look adorable with a light sundress? And in my closet?

My Sephora Wish List!

One of my favorite sections of Sephora’s website is Airplane-Approved Beauty. I hate to fly, so it has nothing to do with a fondness for travel; I just love the mini-sized products and the smaller, “try-me” price tags of items in this section.

I’d love to try Cargo’s Color Cards (above), flat cards with eye shadow embossed onto them. Each box contains 28 cards with different colors.

Also on my wish list from Cargo is their Daily Gloss, a 30-day supply of lip gloss in tear-away pouches. There are 10 little bubbles on each sheet and 3 different colors of lip gloss.

Next up is Carolina Herrera’s 212 Sexy roll-on perfume, one that I’ve actually tried already. This is one of favorite perfumes, a rich, “seductive blend of captivating tangerine, bergamot, and rose pepper sprinkled with floral petals, gardenia, and hints of cotton candy warmed with musk”, according to the product description. It has a warm, sexy, very alluring scent, and it lasts a long time. I prefer a spray bottle to a roll-on, but this is great for in your purse or when you are travelling.

For make-up that does double duty, there’s Clinique’s Perfectly Happy Duo, with Clinique Happy fragrance roller-ball at one end and a Full Potential Lips Plump and Shine at the other (one has Peach Plum, the other has Pink Champagne). Sephora also has this type of item with other fragrances, like Vera Wang. For $25, it’s a great way to carry two items at once in a streamlined package.
